about

A group of us in the main lecture and seminar space at the Slow Studio, London

We are designers, innovators, amateurs, intellectuals, architects, artists, students, doctors, authors, analysts, scientists, retailers, film makers, thinkers, forecasters, doers, makers, philosophers and provocateurs!

We are British, French, Nigerian, American, South African, Irish, Brazilian, Swedish, Indian, Chinese, Bolivian, Swiss, Greek, Canadian, Spanish, Portuguese, Turkish, Israeli, and Lithuanian!

We work with structures. Traditionally, these structures were called textiles. Today, they are, more broadly, structures for they have implicit power that edify and communicate our cultures.

Each individual is the group! This means that we practice as individuals who are connected by and with the community.

We are here to make change in the industry that is textiles (large and small) and, by default, the industries that connect with textiles, to try out new methods of work and working, to challenge, provoke, stimulate, retire, push forward, recede, expose, explode, create, converse, articulate, promote, lead, listen, hear, make visible, innovate, connect and show!

Strength of vision, the utilisation of tension and traction and the co-existence of difference and complexity: these are the underlying strengths of this group.

Equipped with knowledge, skill and understanding, we exercise and promote sustainability and responsibility in all our work. The skills and knowledge within the group are widespread, from the simply experiential to the highest level of research in the field.

We are a social enterprise which means that our every move is about sharing, facilitating and moving forward with sustainable development central to our vision, remit and  momentum.

A group of us in a seminar on Postmodernism in Textiles at the Slow Studio Ed Bloc, London

The Slow Textiles Group offers a stimulating and containing space for creative people everywhere. Keeping sight of creative vision, practice and creative contemporaries with whom to share becomes less tenable over time. As work, business, money and family take over, making space for learning, creating, developing, exhibiting, sharing and discussing fades.

The Slow Textiles Group offers you space.

The group offers the physical and psychological space of knowing that we are here, meeting on regular dates (in London and on the web), looking at great themes for thought, practise, development, divergence, convergence, dialogue, creativity, expression, momentum and form.

Our workshops are focussed and sophisticated. Our lectures and seminars are relevant and pointed. Our meetings are fluid and structured. Our exhibitions are pioneering; our publications innovate; our research projects break the mould. You can sign up for a one-off event or a whole year's structure. To become one of the community, you need to become a member.

An ideation workshop in the main fashion and textiles studio at the Slow Studio, London

Each workshop is about exploring, learning, sewing, printing, developing ideas, designing, meeting people, seeing old faces, networking, having fun and numerous other things - both material and immaterial!

All materials are supplied unless otherwise stated.

You're welcome to bring along your own materials for working on, upcycling and sharing.

Incidentally, the promotion of waste minimization through social and cultural activity is one of our driving forces. The promotion of textile techniques that extend the life of garments, fabric, fibre, cultural form, know-how and expression is also a continuous theme.
