"If the body is an organism in culture, a cultural artefact, as author Elisabeth Wilson suggests in Adorned in Dreams - Fashion & Modernity, then Slow Fashion and Slow Textiles represent a collective statement of no, our bodies and identities cannot embody culture's prescriptive speeds of fast.

Where cotton fabric is concerned, legs are lost, additional fingers are grown and heads are twice their natural size in many parts of the world. Human deformation and tragedy exist because of fast fashion's long held race to the bottom antics. Agreements to ban endosulfan are only just taking place. Fashion cotton and human misery have had a long history.

About the Founder of the Slow Textiles Group

Dr Emma Neuberg is a key member of the pioneering Textiles Environment Design research group and an associate member of the Textile Futures Research Group at University of the Arts, London, UK.

She gained her PhD in Printed Textiles at the Royal College of Art in London, the best postgraduate art school in the world!

She works closely with the Chelsea School of Art & Design textile practitioners and researchers developing and disseminating Slow Textiles strategies, frameworks and systems. (Recently she has been attending UK government events to press for policy change and sustainable design and innovation strategies). One of her many collaborations is with the pioneering The People's Print, co-founded with Melanie Bowles, expert in the field.

She lectures at the Centre of Sustainable Fashion at the London College of Fashion with the sustainable fashion designer and visionnaire, Dilys Williams, and pioneer in the field, Dr Kate Fletcher.

Emma has combined roles of artist, designer, lecturer and author for many years. During this time she has been recognised with national awards for her work and pioneering vision.

These include the Winston Churchill Industrial Enterprise Fellowship, the British Federation of Women's Graduate Research Award, the Textile Institute Scholarship and the Creative Pioneer Award from the National Endowment for Science, Technology & the Arts (UK).
